Kane is a 8 years old black Labrador cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Like most Labradors, he is very intelligent and playful. He was rescued by Last Chance Animal Rescue in Edenbridge from a kennel in Wales. He stayed in the dog kennel in Wales for some time and because they could not find owners for him he was about to be put to sleep when Last Chance Animal Rescue rescued him.
The reason of him being abandoned were unknown but we believe his owners must have loved him very much and probably had good reasons not to keep him any more. In a climate of crisis, they might have lost their home and could not cope anymore. Kane stayed more than 4 months in the kennel Edenbridge. Because of his age, bad manners on the lead and his aggressive behavior towards other dogs, it was difficult to find him a home. We visited the kennel in September and wanted to give him a chance. In the kennel, we were attracted by his quiet and friendly behavior towards people. We took him for a walk, thinking he would be a good companion. On the 13th of September 2009, we brought our Labrador to his new home where he was happy to find a good size garden and a comfy bed. We played for up to an hour in the garden throwing balls. Kane was also very happy to find his new bed. He could not stop rolling over is new blanket. It was very touching and, from this moment, we knew he was happy in his new home. The first days, we had to show him the rules and boundaries. In the house, we limited the access of some rooms so that he can only come in on invitation. At first, it was not easy as, like most dogs who are abandoned in kennels, he suffered from separation anxiety and was following us everywhere. As soon as we were moving, he would follow our footsteps. With each day passing by, he became more and more confident and, slowly, we started to gain his trust. As most Labradors, he proved himself to be very obedient and eager to please. Everyday, we would take Kane on long walks along the beach. During the first month, we would avoid introducing him to other dogs, thinking it was way too early as he first had to adjust to his new life. During the first week, we stayed at home with him and the following week, he was ready to come to work with us. At work, he was happy to make new friends. Since we rescued him Kane has made a lot of progress and learned many new things. He is always eager to please and he is of good company for all of us.
